2012 Program Information

FOR BOYS AND GIRLS 9 - 17 YEARS OF AGE

Purpose of Program: To acquaint the youth of our community with the experience of ocean swimming and its hazards, while exposing them to an environment that will teach them courtesy, respect, discipline, sound morals, and good sportsmanship.
Program Content: Ocean and beach safety, lifesaving techniques, procedures for bodysurfing, body boarding, board surfing, development of swimming skills, competition with other Jr. Lifeguard programs, volleyball, and miscellaneous beach games, activities, field trips and ecology.
Program Schedule:

Monday through Friday, June 25 through August 16, 2018.

Morning Session: 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM

Afternoon Session: 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM

Requirments:

Open to boys and girls ages 9 through 17 (as of July 1, 2012).  Applicants must possess a basic swimming ability to be able to pass the following prerequisite exams:

Swim 100 yards in less than 1 minute & 50 seconds
Tread water for five minutes
Swim underwater for approximately 10 yards

Tryout Dates:

Fountain Valley High School Pool, located between Talbert & Slater on Bushard
(FVHS pool is located behind the gym).

How to Enroll: Parents must complete the registration form provided at tryouts. New applicants must have all data on their form verified by an instructor.
Registration:

RETURNING JUNIOR GUARDS ONLY may register by “mail-in registration,” to be received no later than APRIL 30, 2012.  Those not completing registration by this day may register with the NEW APPLICANTS on the dates listed on back and will loss priority for the A.M. season.  Returning registration should be mailed to the following address:

Returning Guards : Registration forms are mailed to last year’s participants.  The forms must be included with your mail in. Uniforms will be available at the walk in registration dates listed below.
New Applicants :

Register and obtain uniform items on the dates listed below.  New applicants MUST have tryout verification on their registration forms (provided after a successful tryout completion).  Registration and uniform distribution will be conducted at Junior Guard Headquarters.

Proof of age (birth certificate) must be presented at registration.

Enrollment Fee :

$550 for Huntington Beach residents and $575 for non-residents.  This fee includes the following items: swim trunks, T-shirt, sweatshirt, hat, backpack, patches, and the cost of all field trips and events.  Group photos are an additional $25-$30.  Girls’ one-piece suits are approximately $35- $40, two-piece suits approximately $40 - $45; boys Speedos $15.  Students wishing to wear rashguards must wear a Junior Guard rashguard for identification purposes.  Rashguards are $18 for short sleeve or $23 for long sleeve.  They are available at registration.  Parking passes will be issued for the parkin Parking passes will only be valid during regular Junior Lifeguard hog area in Lot 2 (Lot 2: is from 1st street to Beach Blvd.) urs, from 7 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday  

Important: The Junior Guard parking pass  will only be permitted in the city lot #2 Monday through Friday.  Parking in the downtown parking structure, parking meters, pier plaza and any other city lots will not be valid on this pass.

Uniforms: Additional uniforms may be purchased at Junior Guard Headquarters throughout the season.  All Junior Guards will wear their uniforms each day.  No substitutes will be permitted unless prior arrangements have been made.
Lottery Information :

Should any division in the morning session near capacity registration, a lottery of names will be conducted for all available spots.  Those successfully completing the swims and wishing to be in the morning session lottery should fill out the card on the morning of tryouts (see tryout times and dates).

The lottery will be conducted at 4:00 PM, May 30, at Junior Guard Headquarters.   Priority for AM session will be given to siblings of returning Jr. Guard families.  A listing of priority registration will be posted outside Junior Guard Headquarters on Friday June 1st.

Note: Maximum registration will be 1,200 participants.  Priority will be given to the returning Junior Guards and their qualifying siblings.  New applicant priority will be based on the fastest swim times under 1 minute & 50 seconds.

Directions:

From the 405 Freeway, take Beach Boulevard south to Pacific Coast Highway. Huntington City Beach is directly across Pacific Coast Highway and extends north from Beach Boulevard to Seapoint Street. Beach Parking is available in designated locations.

Junior Lifeguard Headquarters is located on the beach side of Pacific Coast Highway near tower 5.
