Parent Communication: We will continue to send paper fliers home for certain events and activities, however, the bulk of our communication will be via email and attachments to the email. For every upcoming event, information will be available at our website: www.juniorguard.com, in addition, you will receive an update with specific times and directions via email. If there is ever a conflict between the calendar and the email/paper flier, the email/paper flier will take precedence, as occasionally there may be last minute changes.
Questions you have can be answered by replying to our email or by emailing us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. However, as we will have several different instructors answering your emails, if you could state the age level of your junior guard in the subject line, that will help us direct your email to the appropriate group leader. For example, the subject line should read:

2016 JUNIOR LIFEGUARD PROGRAM
FOR BOYS AND GIRLS 9 – 17 YEARS OF AGE
PURPOSE OF PROGRAM: To acquaint the youth of our community with the experience of ocean swimming and its hazards, while exposing them to an environment that will teach them courtesy, respect, discipline, sound morals, and good sportsmanship.
PROGRAM CONTENT: Ocean and beach safety, lifesaving techniques, procedures for bodysurfing, body boarding, board surfing, development of swimming skills, competition with other Jr. Lifeguard programs, volleyball, and miscellaneous beach games, activities, field trips and ecology.
PROGRAM SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday, June 27 through August 18, 2016.
Morning Session 8:30 AM to 12:00 Noon
Afternoon Session 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM
REQUIREMENTS: Open to boys and girls ages 9 through 17 (as of July 1, 2016). Applicants must possess a basic swimming ability to be able to pass the following prerequisite exams:
• Swim 100 yards in 1 minute and 50 seconds or below (Ages 9-13).
• 9-11 year olds are eligible for the program if they make the time requirement of 1:51-2:00, but they will be enrolled in the P.M. session only, regardless of siblings.
• Swim 100 yards in 1 minute and 45 seconds or below for ages 14-17.
• Tread water for five minutes
• Swim underwater for approximately 10 yards

HOW TO ENROLL (New Junior Lifeguards): Once you have successfully completed all tryout requirements, registration for the new junior lifeguards will open on May 5, 2016. You will receive registration instructions once you successfully complete tryouts. Registration instructions will also be located on our website at www.juniorguard.com
HOW TO ENROLL (Returning Junior Lifeguards): Returning junior lifeguards will receive an email with instructions for registration procedures. Please contact us if you are a returning junior lifeguard and you have not received a letter or if you have any questions or difficulties with enrollment. Registration for returners will open in March 1st and close on April 30th.
UNIFORM PICKUP DATES: Uniform items will be available for pick up on the dates listed below. New Junior Guards MUST successfully complete tryouts prior to registration online and picking up uniforms. Uniform distribution will be conducted at Junior Guard Headquarters.

Proof of age (birth certificate) must be presented at registration.
ENROLLMENT FEE: $605 for Huntington Beach residents and $630 for non-residents. This fee includes the following items: swim trunks, 2 T-shirts, a sweatshirt, a hat, a backpack, patches, an 8 week program parking pass, and the cost of all field trips and events.
Parking passes will be issued for the parking area in Lot 2 (Lot 2: is from 1st Street to Beach Blvd.) Parking passes will only be valid during regular Junior Lifeguard hours, from 7 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday. The Junior Lifeguard parking pass will not be valid for parking in the downtown parking structure, parking meters, Pier Plaza and any other city lots.
PAYMENT OPTIONS: Pay online at hbsands.org once registration opens or at the City of Huntington Beach Lifeguard Headquarters. (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover).
UNIFORMS: Included in the program fees: swim trunks, 2 T-shirts, sweatshirt, hat, backpack, and patches.
Additional uniform pieces: Girls’ one-piece suits are $45, two-piece suits are $50; boys speedos are $18 and jammers at $25.
Students wishing to wear rashguards must wear a Junior Guard rashguard for identification purposes. Rashguards are $20 for short sleeve or $25 for long sleeve. Swimsuits and rashguards are available at the weekend registration dates.
Additional uniforms may be purchased at Junior Guard Headquarters throughout the season. All Junior Guards will wear their uniforms each day.
NOTE: Maximum registration will be 1200 participants.
Should any division in the morning session near capacity registration; a lottery of names will be conducted for all available spots. Those successfully completing the swims and wishing to be in the morning session lottery should fill out the card on the morning of tryouts (see tryout times and dates). Priority for AM session will be given to siblings of returning Jr. Guard families. A listing of priority registration will be posted outside Junior Guard Headquarters on Friday, June 3rd.
