This year the Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division, including Junior Lifeguards has moved from being part of the Community Services Department to now being a division of the Fire Department. With this change, there will be some policy changes that will affect the way the junior guard department will be run. One of the many positive changes that will affect our program will be the hiring of new instructors to lower our instructor to student ratio from 25/1 to 20/1.
With regards to registration policies, we will be strictly adhering to the April 30th deadline for returning junior guard registration. If we do not receive your registration and a minimum $100 deposit to hold your place by April 30th, returning junior guards that request the AM session will not be guaranteed an AM place and will be placed in the lottery with all new junior guards. Siblings of current junior guards will continue to have priority for the AM session, however, if the returning sibling drops out of the program, the new sibling will be placed in the lottery. If the returning sibling drops after the lottery has been drawn, the new sibling will be placed at the end of the lottery list for AM.
Refunds this year will incur a $25 administrative fee if requested prior to the beginning of the program. Refunds requested after the program has begun will be prorated depending on the date of the refund request. No refunds will be given after 7/22/16.
This year tryout requirements for new junior guards will be as follows:
All new junior guards will need to tread water for 5 minutes and swim underwater for 10 yards.
For the 100 yard swim, junior guards aged 9-13 must go under 1:50 to be eligible for the program including the lottery for the AM session.
If a junior guard is aged 9-11 and swims between 1:51-2:00they will be eligible for the PM session only. They will only be eligible for the PM session regardless of having a sibling in the AM session or not.
For all junior guards aged 14-17, the time requirement is under 1:45.
