Captain’s Catalina Trip- 2011
Parson’s Landing

The Captains again have the opportunity to travel to Parson’s Landing on Catalina Island.  The trip is set for Saturday, July 30th with a returning date of Monday, August 1st.  The group will travel to and from the island aboard the Catalina Express out of San Pedro.  Captains will be sleeping under the stars at Parson’s Landing, approximately an eight-mile hike out of Two Harbors.  All Captains will be required to carry their own gear, plus some food that the group will eat while on the trip.  While on the island they will observe the native marine life, the indigenous life of the island, and continue their physical training for the rest of the summer.

Captains should report to the San Pedro Landing at 7:00 A.M. on Friday.  Everyone is responsible for getting his or her own rides to and from the landing.  Pick up is at the same location in San Pedro at approximately 4:00 P.M. on Sunday.

Departure:
Saturday, July 30.  8:00 A.M. from San Pedro (Catalina Express).  We need to be there no later than 7:00 A.M. at the boat dock.    
Pick-up: Monday, August 1.  4:00 P.M. from San Pedro (Catalina Express).

What to bring:  (REMINDER- you carry what you bring!)
Backpack (A Real Hiking Backpack- you may rent some at REI or Sports Chalet)

** No tents will be allowed.  Everyone must sleep in their own bag, no joining of bags. 

Each Squad will be bringing in some food for the group, make sure that you can carry your bag for the 8 mile hike (each way). 
No propane can be brought on the boat!  No knives are permitted as well.

Directions to San Pedro (Berth 95):
Take Pacific Coast Highway through Huntington Beach/Sunset and Seal Beach.  In Long Beach turn left on 2nd Street.  Take 2nd Street through Belmont Shore.  Turn left on Livingston which will turn into Ocean Blvd.  Take Ocean Blvd through downtown Long Beach into Terminal Island.  You will go over 2 smaller bridges through Terminal Island.  Ocean Blvd. will turn into Highway 47.  Keep taking Highway 47 and go over the Vincent  Thomas Bridge (3rd bridge).  Exit the first off ramp on the right after going over the bridge. Follow the signs to Catalina Terminal, Berth 95.  If you do not understand the directions given, please look on Mapquest or use your GPS

San Onofre (Camp Pendleton) Surf Trip

On Wednesday, August 10th, the Junior Guard A’s, Safety Aides, and Captains are participating in a surf trip to San Onofre (Camp Pendleton).  All Junior Guards will need to report at 7:45 A.M. at Junior Guard Headquarters.

All guards should bring a large sack lunch and warm clothing.  Junior Guards are not required to wear Junior Guard uniforms on this special surf day.  A few drinks will be provided, but bring enough food and drink to last throughout the day.  They may also bring their surfboards, boogie boards and fins.  We will load the boards onto a large truck and take down the equipment, but it is at your own risk.  If you are late you may not have your board loaded due to the limited amount of space.  Junior Guard surfboards will be available for checkout in 30-minute intervals.

The busses will return to Junior Guards at 4:30 P.M.

2011 Annual Junior Guard Dance

Our annual Junior Guard dance is coming up! The dance will be held Friday, August 12th, 2011 at the city gym, 1600 Palm Avenue. The gym is located on the corner of 17th and Palm Avenue in Huntington Beach. The dance will start at 7:00 pm and end promptly at 10:00 pm. The C’s need to be picked up at approximately 9:15 pm; the B’s at 9:30 pm; and the A’s at 10:00 pm. The cost of admission is $5.00.  The $5.00 fee will also allow the junior guards to have a soft drink and entry into our raffle.

The annual dance is very popular among the junior guards.  The theme of the dance this year is “NERDS!”.  Junior guards should come dressed in their best nerd-gear, think Napoleon Dynamite and Urkel!  Remember to be creative when making your own costume.  This event is intended to be fun, and will be very entertaining to see what costumes the junior guards come up with.  Please note there will be a dress code that will be strictly enforced.  Junior Guards must be dressed in a minimum of shorts and shirts.  No scantily clad costumes or Speedos will be permitted.

Only junior guards have the privilege of attending this function.  Non-junior guards will not be admitted into the dance.
  
Our staff would appreciate it if you would please arrive on time to pick up your Junior Guard.  If you wish to pick up your Junior Guard early, please make arrangements to meet your child at the door at your agreed time.  Instructor security guards will assist in locating your child, if necessary.  If you have any questions, contact me at 375-5079.

As the summer winds down, we are looking ahead towards our annual Junior Lifeguard Graduation Ceremony. The Graduation Ceremony will be held on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Edison High School in Huntington Beach. The address is 21400 Magnolia Street, Huntington Beach, CA 92646. The Dinner and Silent Auction will begin at 3:30 PM. All Junior Guards are to be lined-up behind the stage at 5:30 PM. Graduation will begin promptly at 6:00 PM. Following the slideshow, we will have an Ice Cream & Cookie Social provided by the Junior Guard Program. You are welcome to bring lawn chairs for the limited grassy area. In addition, due to evening weather conditions a light jacket is recommended.

*Graduation Dinner: Presale tickets for taco plates will go on sale Thursday, August 4th. The
dinner will include 2 tacos (carne asada, carnitas or chicken), rice, beans, chips and a drink. Please tear/cut off the bottom of this flyer and send it in with your check of $7.00 per ticket. We will keep a master list (in lieu of tickets) which will be available the evening of graduation. Ticket sales will end Friday, August 12th.

*Raffle: Our raffle will have many exciting prizes again this year. Tickets can be purchased at the Pancake Breakfast and at Graduation. Tickets are 3 for $5, 12 for $10, or your Best Value, 30 for $20. Winners need not be present to win.
