Captain’s Catalina Trip- 2008
Parson’s Landing

This year the Captains have the opportunity to travel to Parson’s Landing on Catalina Island.  The trip is set for Tuesday, July 29th with a returning date of Thursday, July 31st.  The group will travel to and from the island aboard the Catalina Express out of San Pedro.  Captains will be sleeping under the stars at Parson’s Landing, approximately an eight-mile hike out of Two Harbors.  All Captains will be required to carry their own gear, plus some food that the group will eat while on the trip.  While on the island they will study marine life, the indigenous life of the island, and continue their physical training for the rest of the summer.

Captains should report to the San Pedro Landing at 6:00 A.M. on Tuesday.  Everyone is responsible for getting his or her own rides to and from the landing.  Pick up is at the same location in San Pedro at approximately 4:00 P.M. on Thursday.

Departure:
6:40 A.M. from San Pedro (Catalina Express).  We need to be there no later than 6:00 A.M. at the boat dock.    
Pick-up: 4:00 P.M. from San Pedro (Catalina Express).

What to bring:  (REMINDER- you carry what you bring!)
Backpack (A Real Hiking Backpack- you may rent some at REI or Sports Chalet)

** No tents will be allowed.  Everyone must sleep in their own bag, no joining of bags. 

Each Squad will be bringing in some food for the group, make sure that you can carry your bag for the 8 mile hike (each way). 
No propane can be brought on the boat!  No knives are permitted as well.

Directions to San Pedro (Berth 95):
Take Pacific Coast Highway through Huntington Beach/Sunset and Seal Beach.  In Long Beach turn left on 2nd Street.  Take 2nd Street through Belmont Shore.  Turn left on Livingston which will turn into Ocean Blvd.  Take Ocean Blvd through downtown Long Beach into Terminal Island.  You will go over 2 smaller bridges through Terminal Island.  Ocean Blvd. will turn into Highway 47.  Keep taking Highway 47 and go over the Vincent St. Thomas Bridge (3rd bridge).  Exit the first off ramp on the right after going over the bridge. Follow the signs to Catalina Terminal, Berth 95.  If you do not understand the directions given, please look on Mapquest.

Raging Waters

On Monday, August 11th the “A’s”, “Captains”, and “Safety Aide” groups will be going to Raging Waters in San Dimas.  All guards should report by 8:00 a.m. Busses will depart Junior Lifeguard Headquarters at 8:30 a.m. for San Dimas.  The busses will return at approximately 7:00 P.M. that same day, barring any unforeseen delays.

Guards should wear their uniform, bring a towel and have sufficient money to buy snacks for the day. A lunch consisting of hamburgers, fruit salad, chili and a dessert will be provided from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M., along with unlimited beverages throughout the day in our programs base area.  An important reminder: Raging Waters will not allow food to be brought into the park.  They will look in your bag and make you discard any food or water.  Please do not bring any food on this trip.
