2009 Junior Guard Graduation Ceremony

As the summer winds down, we are looking ahead towards our annual Junior Lifeguard Graduation Ceremony. The Graduation Ceremony will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at Edison High School in Huntington Beach. The address is 21400 Magnolia Street, Huntington Beach, CA 92646. The Dinner and Silent Auction will begin at 3:30 PM. All Junior Guards are to be lined-up behind the stage at 5:30 PM. Graduation will begin promptly at 6:00 PM. Following the slideshow, we will have an Ice Cream & Cookie Social provided by the Junior Guard Program. You are welcome to bring lawn chairs for the limited grassy area. In addition, due to evening weather conditions a light jacket is recommended.

*Graduation Dinner: Presale tickets for taco plates will go on sale Thursday, July 30th. The
dinner will include 2 tacos (carne asada, carnitas or chicken), rice, beans, chips and a drink. Please tear/cut off the bottom of this flyer and send it in with your check of $6.50 per ticket. We will keep a master list (in lieu of tickets) which will be available the evening of graduation. Ticket sales will end Monday, August 10th.

*Raffle: Our raffle will have many exciting prizes again this year. Tickets can be purchased at the Pancake Breakfast and at Graduation. Tickets are 30 for $20 or $1 each. Winners need not be present to win.

*Silent Auction: This year we will have another great silent auction. The items that will be up for bid will be provided by our New Zealand Travel Team. This is an opportunity for them to help raise funds for their trip. The team will be traveling to New Zealand December 20, 2009. We appreciate your continued support.

Annual Junior Guard Dance

Our annual Junior Guard dance is back on! The dance will be held Friday, August 7th, 2009 at the city gym, 1600 Palm Avenue. The gym is located on the corner of 17th and Palm Avenue in Huntington Beach. The dance will start at 7:00 pm and end promptly at 10:00 pm. The C’s need to be picked up at approximately 9:15 pm; the B’s at 9:30 pm; and the A’s at 10:00 pm. The cost of admission is $5.00. Profit from the dance will go to support the Junior Guard Program’s new storage facility. The $5.00 fee will also allow the junior guards to have shaved ice, a soft drink and entry into our raffle which contains items from Huntington Surf and Sport and other fun prizes.

The annual dance is very popular among the junior guards. We consider the dance a very important fund-raiser and one of the highlights of the program. The theme of the dance this year is “Zoomania”. Junior guards should come dressed as their favorite animal from around the world, or they can make up their own animal and create a costume. Remember to be creative when making your own costume. This event is intended to be fun, and will be very entertaining to see what costumes the junior guards come up with. Please note there will be a dress code that will be strictly enforced. Junior Guards must be dressed in a minimum of shorts and shirts. No scantily clad costumes or Speedos will be permitted.

Only junior guards have the privilege of attending this function. Non-junior guards will not be admitted into the dance.

Our staff would appreciate it if you would please arrive on time to pick up your Junior Guard. If you wish to pick up your Junior Guard early, please make arrangements to meet your child at the door at your agreed time. Instructor security guards will assist in locating your child, if necessary. If you have any questions, contact me at 374-5079.

Parking Pass Reminders

We at the Junior Lifeguards would like to remind you that the parking passes distributed at the beginning of the season are given to the Junior Guard program by the City Council for your convenience. This pass is not a part of the cost of the Junior Guard program and should not be considered as a purchase made by you. For this reason it is important that we not abuse these rules as that could jeopardize this benefit. This is a summer of transition. Our south parking lot is undergoing major renovations and will impact parking procedures. The following guidelines should be implemented to assure a safe and comfortable method of dropping off and picking up your Junior Guards.

1. All cars ENTER at Beach Boulevard.
2. All cars EXIT at Huntington Street.
3. No pickup/drop off on the other side of PCH.
4. Carpool/ride a bike/walk to the beach whenever possible. This will also save money and help the environment.
5. Older Junior Guards may be dropped off further away (Tower 11) and walk the rest of the way.
6. Be aware that the times between 11:45 A,M. and 1:15 P.M. will be the most impacted as these times mark the end of the AM session and the beginning of the PM session.
7. Remember that parking or stopping at a red curb is illegal and may result in a citation.
