Wedge Run

The last major physical requirement that the Captains will need to complete is the Wedge Run.  At this time our plan is to start the event on Monday, August 18th at 6:15 A.M.  We will meet at the top of Pier Plaza at 6:00 to stretch and review the course.  We will start the event at the base of the pier and run south until we reach “The Wedge”.  We must swim all jetties and buoys just south of the piers as part of the event.

We will need a number of parents (approximately 10-12 cars) who are willing to help us out and meet the Captains at about 8:00 A.M. at “The Wedge” for rides back to Huntington Beach.  If you are planning to assist us, there are a number of good locations to view and photograph the event such as the Newport and Balboa Piers, as well as the finish at the Wedge.  Immediately after the return to Junior Guards, the Captains will go to eat breakfast at Ruby’s as a group (please bring enough money to support your appetite).

The only planned activity for this day is the Wedge Run and eating at Ruby’s.  If you wish to work your scheduled day at the beach you will be able to work if your body can handle it.  Remember, this is a rigorous event and all participants will need to be mentally prepared for this event.  The Wedge Run is grueling, and necessary steps should be taken to ensure that you are ready to go on Monday. Remember to hydrate and carb up for this event.  Eat something light on Monday morning and make sure to hydrate.

Good luck and thank you to all parents for your assistance.

Sincerely,
Mr. Luttrell

Please print out the section below and return it by Wednesday, August 13th if your parents are able to assist us in returning from “The Wedge” back to HB.

Raging Waters

On Monday, August 11th the “A’s”, “Captains”, and “Safety Aide” groups will be going to Raging Waters in San Dimas.  All guards should report by 8:00 a.m. Busses will depart Junior Lifeguard Headquarters at 8:30 a.m. for San Dimas.  The busses will return at approximately 7:00 P.M. that same day, barring any unforeseen delays.

Guards should wear their uniform, bring a towel and have sufficient money to buy snacks for the day. A lunch consisting of hamburgers, fruit salad, chili and a dessert will be provided from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M., along with unlimited beverages throughout the day in our programs base area.  An important reminder: Raging Waters will not allow food to be brought into the park.  They will look in your bag and make you discard any food or water.  Please do not bring any food on this trip.

If you have any questions please call me at 375-5079.

San Onofre Surf Trip

On Thursday, August 14th, the Junior Guard A’s, Safety Aides, and Captains are participating in a surf trip to San Onofre (Camp Pendleton).  All Junior Guards will need to report at 7:30 A.M. at Junior Guard Headquarters.

All guards should bring a large sack lunch and warm clothing.  Junior Guards are not required to wear Junior Guard uniforms on this special surf day.  A few drinks will be provided, but bring enough food and drink to last throughout the day.  They may also bring their surfboards, boogie boards and fins.  We will load the boards onto a large truck and take down the equipment, but it is at your own risk.  If you are late you may not have your board loaded due to the limited amount of space.  Junior Guard surfboards will be available for checkout in 30-minute intervals.

The busses will return to Junior Guards at 4:30 P.M.

If you have any questions, please contact Greg Luttrell or Kyley Morita at 375-5176.
